New PARAM view - Requesting User Feedback

Hi everybody!

Based on some feedback I received from some NGEN users, I realized it’d be a good idea to implement a dedicated view to display what parameters are currently mapped to the 4 PARAM knobs since these mappings are dynamic and change depending on the sub-menu you’re currently in.

I have been working on this new feature (which I’m planning to release with the next 1.4 update) and here’s a preview of what it looks like so far:

NGENParamViewPreview

This new view will display the Param number, Parameter name, and current value for each of the 4 param knobs in different quadrants, and it should work in any of the sub-menus.
Moving the knobs while in this view will highlight the corresponding quadrant to make it easier to visually identify which one you’re currently adjusting.

I would love to hear people’s thoughts on this design, but most importantly, I’d like to get some user feedback on how this view should be activated.

While I’d love to make this accessible via a shortcut, I don’t think any of the currently available shortcuts would make much sense, so my current plan is to make it so it can be accessed by scrolling to the left (CCW) from the first item in any of the sub-menus.
It’s possible to exit the view by clicking Return (which would return to the first parameter in the sub-menu you are in) or by scrolling to the right.

NGENParamViewPreview2

Before committing to this approach, I’d love to hear from you (especially new users) what you think about this feature, the design, and most importantly, this method of accessing this view.

Please keep in mind that, ideally, I’d prefer not to change or replace the current shortcuts to avoid any additional confusion for existing users.

Going forward, one of my primary goals for NGEN will be to make it more accessible, especially for new users, so all feedback would be incredibly appreciated!

Thanks you!

That’s exactly the issue. I mean, it looks very useful, but, it seems to me that a user will eventually memorize the param knobs that they most frequenty use, so I wonder if this new feature will function more like training wheels that a person stops using eventually. I’m relatively new, so maybe experienced users will have more of an opinion about that. As for me, I’ve memorized my few go-to moves, but maybe I’d find more macro knob wiggling useful if something made it easier to memorize them or to quickly give me a visual hint like this new feature.

I do keep a cheatsheet of param knob functions around so that I will eventually memorize much more.

To sum up, if it doesn’t interfere with existing workflows or itself involve a confusing workflow, this new feature can only be a help. If experienced users feel that you always eventually gravitated toward a relatively small proportion of the available macros, then the new feature will have more of a “training wheel” functionality than a real-time performance advantage.

I like the idea. I’m still doing everything step by step as I haven’t learned those shortcuts, so even I would get use out of it. And, I think rolling back to the left is a great place to put it!
